Norrmejerier:  – Urgent action needed

Swedish dairy farmers, particularly in Norrland, are facing a crisis that threatens both their livelihoods and the nation’s preparedness for future crises. This stark warning comes from the leadership of Norrmejerier, that call for immediate government intervention.

In an article published in Dagens Industri just before Christmas, Gerhard Bley, CEO of Norrmejerier and Göran Olofsson, Chairman of the Board at Norrmejerier, called for swift political action to safeguard northern Sweden’s dairy farming industry. They outlined three critical areas for action:

  • Increase National Support for Milk Production
Current support levels have not been adjusted for inflation in years, leaving farmers struggling to stay afloat. Immediate revisions are necessary to improve conditions for dairy producers.
  • Ensure Food Security in Norrland
Northern producers must be given fair market conditions and opportunities to enhance their long-term profitability. This is essential for securing sustainable food production in the region.
  • Prioritize and Accelerate Green Investments
The Klimatklivet program should once again allow for larger projects. Additionally, funding decisions for vital climate initiatives must be expedited to support sustainable farming practices.

– Northern Sweden’s dairy production is not merely a regional concern; it is a matter of national importance. As Bley and Olofsson pointedly ask: – Do we really want to be the country that watches its rural producers collapse while the government stands idly by?
