A new survey from Norrmejerier reveals that aged hard cheese is enjoyed equally across Sweden—regardless of age, gender, or location.
To mark Cheese Day, celebrated on May 27, Norrmejerier released the results of a public opinion survey conducted by Norstat with over 1,000 respondents. The findings show that half of all Swedes eat aged or semi-aged hard cheese several times a week, while one in three enjoys it at least once a month. Only 4.6% say they never consume this type of cheese.
What makes these results particularly striking is the consistency across all demographics. Whether young or old, male or female, cheese holds a firm place in Swedish households. Hard cheese, in particular, stands out as one of the most popular items in the nation’s refrigerators.
Yet, despite this deep-rooted appreciation for cheese, only four out of every ten cheeses consumed in Sweden are produced domestically, according to the Cheese Report. This means that more than half of the hard cheese sold in the country is imported.
- In Sweden, we produce exceptional cheeses—high in quality and rich in flavor—that are also kind to animals and the environment. Cheese Day on May 27 is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and savor our Swedish cheeses, says Sophie Wassberg, Category Manager for Cheese at Norrmejerier.
