Skånemejerier accelerates toward 100% fossil-free transport

Skånemejerier has signed an agreement to achieve 100% fossil-free domestic transport through an insetting model—a climate compensation method where CO₂ reductions occur within a company’s own value chain or in close connection to it.

In 2024, Skånemejerier reached a significant milestone: 96% of its domestic transport operations were fossil-free. Now, the company is taking the final step toward its sustainability goal by partnering with fuel supplier Energifabriken, aiming to reach 100% fossil-free domestic transport by 2025. The initiative is expected to reduce Skånemejerier’s carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 400 tons per year.

The key to achieving this goal is CarbonGo, an innovative insetting model. It enables the company to offset the fossil fuel still used on certain routes by ensuring that an equivalent volume of renewable fuel is used in the vehicles of its long-standing logistics partner, Tommy Nordbergh Åkeri. These vehicles operate on routes with better infrastructure for fossil-free alternatives. This results in more renewable fuel being added to the broader transport system, effectively reducing overall emissions.

  • We are consistently and deliberately working to increase the share of fossil-free fuel in our domestic logistics. We’re proud to have reached 96% in 2024. All our own transports run on HVO, biogas, or electricity, and we require our partners to use renewable fuel wherever possible, says Peter Liljedahl, Transport Manager, Skånemejerier.

One of the biggest challenges in reaching full fossil-free operations has been transport routes in regions with underdeveloped renewable fuel infrastructure, as well as situations where Skånemejerier’s products are shipped together with goods from other companies.

  • When other companies involved in shared transport don’t demand fossil-free fuel, it becomes harder to guarantee it for our smaller deliveries. That’s why we’re now investing in the insetting model, which allows us to ensure that the equivalent of our remaining 4% is covered through renewable transport elsewhere in the network, he explains
The implementation and certification of the CarbonGo solution are overseen by Energifabriken. The model is approved as a valid method for achieving 100% fossil-free domestic transport under the guidelines of the DLF Transport Initiative.
