Skånemejerier kicks off Sweden’s largest children’s race

Skånemejerier has launched this year’s edition of Kalvinknatet, widely regarded as Sweden’s largest race for children, in partnership with MAI. The first event will take place in Trelleborg on 2 May, with the final race scheduled for Malmö on 7 June.

When Kalvinknatet was first held in 2002, around 5,000 children took part. Since then, it has grown into a recurring community celebration, now staged in approximately 20 locations across Skåne, Småland and Halland. In total, more than 440,000 children have participated over the years, and a further 38,000 are expected to run this year.

Annika Hovang, event manager at Malmö Allmänna Idrottsförening, said the core idea has remained unchanged since its inception.
– From the very beginning, the aim has been to encourage children to be active and to enjoy themselves together. The difference today is that the need is likely even greater. We know that sedentary behaviour is increasing, while performance anxiety is affecting children at younger ages. That makes this event more important than ever.”

Kalvinknatet is built on a long-term collaboration between the business community and sports organisations, with a shared focus on creating an inclusive, pressure-free event. This model has proven highly successful. Earlier this year, the race was awarded “Event of the Year – Pulse Raiser” at the Atea Athletics Gala by the Svenska Friidrottsförbundet.

Caroline Hagman, event manager at Skånemejerier, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative.
“For us, Kalvinknatet is about establishing healthy habits early in life. When children have positive experiences linked to movement and community, they are more likely to remain active. The award from the Swedish Athletics Federation is a recognition that this type of initiative is needed, and we are proud to help foster a love of movement from a young age.”

The race is named after Kalvin, the mascot of Skånemejerier’s Kalvin chocolate milk.
