The Swedish oat milk company has canceled plans to build its first UK production facility, which was expected to create 200 jobs.
According to the Peterborough Telegraph, Oatly has confirmed it has scrapped plans to open a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub in Peterborough.
Bryan Carroll, General Manager of Oatly UK & Ireland, says the decision was made after the company found better ways to utilize its existing facilities across Europe.
The Swedish company announced three years ago its intention to build one of the world’s largest plant-based milk factories at Peterborough Gateway, with production expected to start in 2023. Work on the site had begun, but now the company has revealed that the project had already ”been on hold for some time,” writes the Peterborough Telegraph.
Previously, the oat milk producer said the UK factory would have the capacity to grow and produce up to 450 million liters per year using locally sourced oats.
Oatly, headquartered in Malmö, sells its products in more than 20 countries across Europe and Asia.
