Skånemejerier expands quark production as protein demand surges

Last week Skånemejerier inaugurated a new quark production line at its Malmö dairy, following an investment of approximately SEK 70 million to meet soaring demand for protein-rich dairy products, particularly its Lindahls quark range.

The investment includes a new production line and expanded refrigerated storage capacity, enabling the Swedish dairy company to increase output after struggling to keep pace with rapidly growing consumer demand.

“Swedes have really taken quark to their hearts, with sales growing explosively over the past year. Even though we have been producing around the clock and more than ever before, it has not been enough,” said Cecilia von Perglas, CEO of Skånemejerier, in a press release.

“We are therefore delighted that our new quark line is now operational and that we are gradually increasing production.”

Strong market growth

The investment comes amid significant growth in Sweden’s quark market. Sales increased by 34% in the first six months of the year, while the market has expanded by 75% over the past three years, according to NIQ RMS data for Sweden.

More than half of Swedish households now have quark in their refrigerators, and almost one in three Swedes (32%) consume it at least once a month, according to a survey conducted by Verian on behalf of Lindahls.

According to Skånemejerier, growth is driven by increasing consumer interest in health and protein-rich foods, alongside continued product development and innovation.

“Quark is a fantastic food product. It is nutritious, tasty and offers unique versatility in terms of consumption and innovation. It is equally suitable for breakfast, snacks and cooking,” von Perglas said.

Skånemejerier’s Lindahls brand has played a key role in the category’s expansion and is currently Sweden’s leading quark brand.

The new facility is described as one of Europe’s most modern quark production plants and is expected to support further product innovation.

“This investment strengthens both the Malmö dairy and Sweden’s ability to produce more food domestically. Our ambition is to remain at the forefront of the quark category, not only in Sweden but also across Europe,” von Perglas added.
