Wermlands Mejeri celebrates ten years of local dairy success

This year marks a major milestone for Wermlands Mejeri, as the dairy celebrates its tenth anniversary. For this occasion, Jordbruksaktuellt has interviewed CEO Yngve Gustafsson, who has been with the company since its founding in 2015

  • It feels like the years have flown by, says Gustafsson to Jordbruksaktuellt with a laugh. It’s been a really fun period — time goes fast when you’re enjoying yourself!”

At its peak in 2017, Wermlands Mejeri experienced record demand for its milk. Although consumption of sweet milk has declined across Sweden in recent years, the dairy has seen a turnaround in 2025, with sales increasing again for the first time in several years. – Turnover has remained strong all along, Gustafsson notes.

The company has also diversified its range to include organic fil-milk, natural and vanilla yogurt, and cream — the latter now in such high demand that the dairy struggles to meet orders during holidays. Yogurt, meanwhile, has overtaken fil milk in popularity, reflecting a nationwide trend.

Production has risen from 84,000 liters per week in 2015 to about 100,000 liters today, supported by eight local milk suppliers and a growing staff of 8.5 employees.

Despite challenges that have forced many small dairies to close, Gustafsson believes Wermlands Mejeri’s local roots give it an advantage.

  • There’s a lot of regional pride here in Värmland, he says and adds:
  • And in times like these, people see the importance of local food security. We’re ready to keep going — at least another ten years.
