Kavli first to use Arla’s farm data in climate reporting

For the first time in Sweden, climate data from Arla’s dairy farms will be integrated into a food company’s climate reporting. The collaboration between Arla and Kavli represents a breakthrough in achieving more accurate and transparent emissions reporting across the entire value chain.

Arla’s farmers have been measuring the climate footprint of their farms since 2019. Today, around 7,600 Arla farms in Northern Europe – including 1,900 in Sweden – contribute to one of the world’s largest agricultural climate databases. This enables continuous tracking of emissions at farm level and identifies which actions have the greatest impact in reducing them. Kavli will now use this data in its upcoming sustainability report and for product-level climate calculations.

  • Our owners, the dairy farmers, have worked hard to cut emissions, and it’s vital that their progress is reflected further down the chain. Through our partnership with Kavli, we are taking an important step towards more accurate climate reporting in the food industry, says Victoria Olsson, Sustainability Director at Arla Sweden.
  • By using Arla’s farm data, we can show how our purchasing decisions and collaboration with forward-thinking suppliers genuinely contribute to lower climate impact,” adds Victoria Voss, Sustainability Director at Kavli.

Kavli is also supporting the green transition in agriculture through Arla’s sustainability program FarmAhead, launched in 2024. Under the program, food companies co-invest with Arla in climate and environmental initiatives on farms, such as fossil-free fertilizers, restoration of natural pastures, and methane reduction in manure management.

Through this partnership, Kavli gains access to science-based climate data from the farms supplying milk for its products. This allows progress to be tracked and reported in a transparent and verifiable way.

  • The largest share of our climate footprint comes from the raw materials in our products, especially cheese. That’s why it’s essential for us to take responsibility and drive change right there. Only by working together across the value chain can we reach our climate targets. Using suppliers’ actual data gives us both greater transparency and better results, says Victoria Voss, Kavli.
