95% of all people in Sweden eat cheese!

The Cheese Report 2025 shows that taste, price, and Swedish production are the three most important factors when choosing cheese.

The Cheese Report 2025, published in February, is a study on Swedes’ cheese preferences and attitudes towards cheese, conducted by Demoskop on behalf of Svenskmärkning.

The report confirms that Swedes love cheese, especially for breakfast, where hard cheese is the most popular topping. Präst is Sweden’s absolute favorite cheese, followed by Hushållsost and Herrgård.

Taste, price, and Swedish production are the three key factors influencing cheese selection. However, only four out of ten cheeses consumed in Sweden are produced domestically. The report also reveals that most people overestimate how much of the cheese they eat is Swedish.

The main reasons for choosing Swedish cheese are the desire to support Swedish farmers and the domestic food industry. Additionally, half of respondents say they choose Swedish cheese to contribute to Sweden’s self-sufficiency.

“There is no doubt that Swedish cheese has great potential. There is a lot to be done to spread awareness and encourage more people to choose Swedish cheese. The origin labels Från Sverige (‘From Sweden’) and Mjölk från Sverige (‘Milk from Sweden’) make it easy to find cheese made from Swedish milk that is also processed, packaged, and quality-checked in Sweden,” says Tina Stugemo, CEO of Svenskmärkning.
