Today, a large portion of the Swedish cheese market is made up of imported products, a share that has grown over the past 30 years. But Allerum are doing well, Skånemejerier says.
The share of imported cheese in the Swedish market has steadily increased in recent years. In 1995, approximately 90% of all cheese sold in Sweden was domestic. By 2023, Swedish-made cheese accounted for only around 40% of total sales.
In a press release from Skånemejerier, they noted that the Allerum cheese brand has experienced above-average growth in the aged hard cheese category over the past year, primarily driven by the Präst®, Herrgård®, and the new Rike® varieties.
To support Swedish food production, an increase in the supply of locally produced cheese is essential, Skånemejerier states in the press release, adding that Allerum plays a crucial role here; over the past year, it has achieved a 24.8% market share in the aged hard cheese category—the highest in the category. Allerum’s growth has surpassed the overall category, actively driving growth in the aged hard cheese market.
