Between 2022 and 2023, Swedish production of organically reared animals experienced a significant decline compared to previous years.
The intake of organic milk amounted to just over 361,000 tons in 2023, a decrease of 21 percent compared to 2022. Since 2021, the intake of organic milk has decreased by a total of 25 percent. – – For organic milk, we compile statistics every month and therefore already have data for the period from January to April 2024. During this period, the intake was 22 percent lower than during the same period in 2023, writes the Swedish Board of Agriculture in. a resent press release.
– However, the production of organic dairy products did not decrease at the same rate as the intake in 2023. The production of organic consumer milk and fermented products decreased by 4 and 7 percent, respectively, compared to 2022. In 2023, organic consumer milk and fermented products accounted for 16 and 10 percent, respectively, of the total production of these goods in Sweden.
It’s not only organic milk production that has declined. Compared to 2022, the slaughter of organically reared cattle decreased by 8 percent in 2023, and the slaughter of organic sheep and lambs decreased by 12 percent. Additionally, the intake of organic eggs decreased by 11 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, according to a press release from the Swedish Board of Agriculture in July.
