The purpose of Skånemejerier’s sustainability compensation is to create economic incentives for dairy farmers to increase the farm’s positive impact on animals, climate, and nature, while reducing the negative impact.
Efforts at the farm level related to animal welfare, climate, and biodiversity will be reflected in dairy farmers’ compensation for milk. This is the foundation of Skånemejerier’s new sustainability compensation. The compensation is part of Skånemejerier’s program ’Sustainable Dairy Farm,’ which combines existing activities with new initiatives to take the next step toward the vision of becoming Sweden’s most sustainable dairy.
– Dairy farmers are doing substantial work to produce milk with the lowest possible climate impact, which has already contributed to reducing the carbon footprint of milk. Through this new compensation, we want to encourage even more measures by clearly linking milk compensation to sustainability efforts. This provides us with additional opportunities to strengthen the competitiveness of our dairy products in southern Sweden, together with dairy farmers, says Cecilia von Perglas, CEO of Skånemejerier.
The milk price will be adjusted so that part of the compensation is given based on a point system, where points are allocated to several sustainability measures within six main areas: Knowledge and competence, Good animal care, Crop cultivation and carbon storage, Resource-efficient animal production, Fossil-free agriculture, and Biodiversity. The more points dairy farmers receive, the higher their compensation will be.
The new point system for calculating sustainability compensation will be used for the first time in the milk settlement of November.
