Decrease in organic sale – trend or temporary slump?

In 2021, sales of organic food fell in all segments, according to Swedish organic index (Svenskt Ekoindex).

Sales of organic food declined by 5.4 percent in 2021 compared with 2020. This corresponds to a decrease of approximately SEK 1.1 billion in sales value. It is shown by quarterly figures from Svenskt Ekoindex, according to Atl.se

Fruit and vegetables accounted for approximately SEK 400 million of the reduced sales value and dairy products for a loss of SEK 200 million and grain-based products for SEK 100 million.

Sales of organic food declined by a total of 5.4 percent in 2021, compared with the previous year.

According to Gunilla Östangård, market developer at Ekologiska Lantbrukarna, one possible explanation for the loss is in the recoil due to Corona that affected trade during the year.

– If you look at 2019 and compare with 2021, it is still a decrease but only 0.6 percent. So, we do not really know if this is a trend or a temporary slump, she says to Atl.

The report focuses on the development during the last quarter of 2021 when sales of organic food decreased by 8.9 percent while conventional food sales decreased by only 0.9 percent.
