Skånemejerier’s more than 300 milk suppliers in southern Sweden have an average climate footprint of 1.0 kg of carbon dioxide equivalents per kg of delivered milk. According to LRF, that is 27 percent below the EU average.
By mapping the farms’ climate footprint, Skånemejerier and their suppliers together have identified the opportunities reduce the footprint at farm level.
– To know how the farms most effectively can reduce their climate impact, we started a new collaboration in 2020. With the help of the tool ‘Klimatkollen’, developed by the sustainability project Greppa Näringen, the farms can register their use of, for example, feed, manure, and energy and thus calculate how large their emissions of greenhouse gases are in relation to how much raw material they produce, Göran Niléhn, Milk Collection Director at Skånemejerier, says.
– In the spring, 99% of the suppliers chose to carry out the survey. The results show that the farms have a climate footprint of an average of 1.0 kg of carbon dioxide equivalents per kg of delivered milk. We are pleased to see that our suppliers’ climate footprint is low compared to other EU countries. Together, we will now work to lower it further Göran Niléhn says.
– Klimatkollen is also an important step for Skånemejerier to report scientifically based climate goals for the entire dairy according to the global GHG protocol. Transport, packaging, waste and much more also play a role here, and these are also areas that we are constantly working to improve. The climate goals will be validated by Science Based Target in March 2022, Skånemejerier’s Sustainability Manager Jeanette Flodqvist, says.
